What is CANGYM? CANGYM is Canada's National Skill Development Program. It was created by coaches, to be used in recreational gymnastics programs for participants of all ages. CANGYM has two objectives: 1) To provide a badge-based, skill development program for Canadian gymnastic clubs. 2) To provide resource material that complements the Level 1 and 2 National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Gymnastics curriculum. There are 14 different colored badges in the CANGYM program. Each badge consists of approximately 30 different skills. Program skills have been selected to ensure a clear progression from one badge to the next, leading to the key skills that are contained in the GOLD badge. The key skills in this program can be considered building blocks for more advanced gymnastics, but can also stand alone as excellent recreational level skills. The skills of crests 1 to 4 (Bronze) are based on the Fundamental Families of Movements, while the abilities of crest 5 to 8 (Silver) are joining several of thesemoves to form combination skills. Finally, crests 9 through 14 (Gold) focus on mastering key skills, alone and in combination, at an advanced level. In order to obtain a crest, the gymnast must master the required skills on all the apparatus. However, it happens quite often that a gymnast is more advanced on one or two apparatuses. For example, a gymnast may have obtained a level 4 crest, but has mastered the level 6 skills on the bars. |
